Women on the Water, Waves Regatta

May 9, 2009

 Navy Jax Yacht Club

Our first women’s regatta of 2009 promised to be a competitive one, and not due to a large turnout of racers (in fact, only 4 boats could muster a female skipper.)  This year, Magalie and her crew are racing against Liberty Call, on Magalie’s J-30, Salsa Verde.  Skipper Rosanne rebuilt a team after Magalie’s decision to add to the women’s fleet, so for this race she was sailing with three new crew: Sarah, April, and Anna, in addition to her loyal girls from last year, Kristin and Cyndi. King’s Day Regatta
November 8, 2008
(The race that wasn’t)

The Kings Day Regatta hosted by Epping Forest Yacht Club is normally the highlight of the Fall River Racing Series and one of the most anticipated races of the year.  The EFYC staff welcomed the racing crews with coffee and pastries and efficiently registered the twenty-three entrants for this event.  Team Liberty Call was happy to have Ken return as our mainsail trimmer and with Rosanne and Robert on the primary winches, and Jason and Kristin on the foredeck we were ready to race.

The scratch sheet listed fifteen boats in the spinnaker class, six of which were entered as one-design J-24 class racers.  With another two boats in Non-Spin and six in Cruiser Class, this racing fleet was the largest in recent memory.  The course was set up for a two lap windward – leeward course S-G5-G7-G5-G9-F starting just west of EFYC.

Winds at the start were around six to ten knots out of the northwest and we decided on a port tack, pin end start since the starting gate was wide and the rest of the Spinnaker fleet was bunched at the committee boat end of the line.  We crossed the line about ten seconds after the gun and tacked onto starboard in front of an approaching J Boat and Ghost.  We were able to point pretty well and managed to hold our position watching for the leeward boats to tack.  By the time we made our tack we were in position to lay the windward mark and rounded the mark at the head of the fleet.  Credit for our spot-on starting tactics goes to our WSN Skipper Rosanne who called the shots and coached us over the line in a great ...    After three first place finishes in the first three Women on Water regattas, the ladies of Team Liberty Call were looking to end the year in style.  Yet after a very close race at the Hands on the Helm regatta, we were prepared to work hard to secure a win in this final race of the season.

The Rudder Club graciously hosted the race on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.  The winds were forecasted to be out of the NE at 12-18 knots, but actual winds were more in the range of 8-12 knots, shifting every few minutes from NW to N to NE and back again.  Despite the fluky conditions, the Race Committee was able to decide on a course that provided a decent (port-tack favored!) upwind start near the Rudder Club, with a course of S-7-E-7-E-Finish, leaving Read More »

A big thank you to North Florida Cruising Club, the Northeast Florida Women’s Sailing Network (NFCN), and the Rudder Club for hosting a fun evening of partying, followed by a competitive day of racing as we raised funds for the Hubbard House!  The third Women on Water Regatta was more than just a race; it was an event that featured a party, raffle, silent auction, and a fundraiser.  Charlie, Rosanne, Andrea, and Kristin were able to attend the pre-race festivities at the Rudder Club on Friday October 3rd.  As usual, we left Kristin to do the hard work of staying late to collect our raffle prizes, which included wine, coffee, and a BBQ grill.  The girls of Team Liberty Call (including Robert and Jason) were able to donate for this charity event, and with Charlie matching donations, we were able to give a nice donation prior to race day.
